Calvin Harris’s new track has been sparking debate in the EDM world - and the Scottish DJ isn't staying out of it.
54-year-old producer Chicane jumped on social media to call out Calvin Harris over his tune 'Blessings' with vocalist Clemintine Douglas, saying it was a copy of his 1996 classic ‘Offshore’.
Captioned “copyright alert”, Chicane filmed himself in response to Calvin Harris’s single release.
“This is my right to reply to all the comments online about the new Calvin Harris record Blessings similarity to my 30-year-old record ‘Offshore’," he said in the clip.
Chicane went on to line up the two tracks on his computer while dipping one in and one out at a time to prove his point.
I think you’ll probably agree, it’s really hard to decipher when one comes in and one goes,
he said.
That is because they’re almost identical, which is a bit of a problem. I am defending my copyright and my intellectual property here, guys.
Harris wasn't taking this lying down though - so he also responded with a video where he lined up the tracks.
"I'm not hearing it," Harris said.
It's not the same... It's genuinely not the same.
A back and forth loop of each track was played, showing how different the pitches are and how the chords don't line up.
Harris added in a cheeky,
One: you didn't invent the guitar. Two: it's not the same.
He left the real kicker for the end of the clip though, telling Chichane: “Let’s take it back to the song that you ripped off from ‘Love On a Real Train'.”
Harris then looped ‘Offshore’ and ‘Love On a Real Train’ to demonstrate that Chicane may have used the melodies of the 1983 song.
This guy's acting like he’s invented music…You're coming at me like I don’t know anything about music…I live and breathe this shit mate!
Harris ranted.
To be fair, 41-year-old Harris has bigger fish to fry right now - news just dropped he'll be expecting a baby with his wife Vick Hope two years after they tied the knot.
Hope confirmed the rumors on her Radio 1 show by announcing she'll soon go on maternity leave.
It’s all go in Calvin Harris’s life right now! Maybe inspo for another a new tune?
