Kiwi golf star Ryan Fox hits clutch birdie for first PGA tour win and becomes a whole lot richer

The previous best for the 38-year-old was fourth.

Ryan Fox surged from fourth on the leaderboard to clinch the Myrtle Beach Classic on the PGA tour.

He battled for the gutsy win in a playoff against American Harry Higgs and Canadian Mackenzie Hughes, with an epic recovery from an initial wayward shot off the tee.

He chipped it from the back of the green to earn him a birdie, and ultimately, the win.

This win invites him back to this weekend’s round of the PGA tour, as well as $720k US ($1.2m NZD). Not bad at all.

“I played all of (the majors) the last two years and I was pretty gutted to miss the Masters this year,” Fox said after his win.

I knew there was one spot going this week and the only way to get it was to win, so I’m chuffed with that.

Along with the win and the cash, Fox now holds a two-year PGA tour exemption, a spot in the 2026 Sentry Tournament of Champions, 300 FedEx cup points and 27.9 official world golf ranking points.

You can only imagine Fox is offering a quiet thank you to the golf gods, after an extremely inconsistent day yesterday.

He made par just three times during the third round, carding nine birdies and six bogeys, to finish 10-under - good enough for a five-way tie for fourth heading into the final day.

“It was a strange, strange day,” Fox said. “I’m happy I didn’t play my way out of the tournament.”

Fox has been a pro since 2011, and has represented New Zealand at the Olympics in both 2016 and 2020.

A PGA tour win has been a long time coming, and we’re so glad he could get it done.
