'Took my breath away': Lady Gaga breaks record for biggest concert crowd in Brazil

"Thank you for making history with me... "

Lady Gaga has broken the world record for the biggest audience at a concert.

The Paparazzi singer held a free concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that drew an estimated 2.5 million people.

Staged at Copacabana Beach, the gig broke the previous world record held by Madonna, who pulled in 1.6 million people at the same venue last year.

Following the show, Gaga, 39, posted an emotional tribute to her Brazilian fans.

"Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night's show - the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil," she wrote.

"The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you."

The show almost didn't take place after Brazilian state police intelligence uncovered a bomb plot against the event, however, it was thwarted. "Your spirit may be heard around the world tonight. Two and a half million people," Gaga told fans as she looked out over the assembled crowd.

"Tonight, we're making history. Thank you for making history with me... The people of Brazil are the reason why I can shine."
