‘I'm so sorry’: Lorde shuts down New York park after huge crowds show to meet her

“I am truly amazed by how many of you showed up.”

UPDATE: Lorde has now shown up at Washington Square Park with a big speaker to preview her new single 'What Was That.' You can listen to the full version right here:

Kiwi pop girly Lorde has proved again that the hype for her is real, after hundreds of fans shut down a New York park in hopes of hearing her newest single ‘What Was That’.

The 28-year-old singer posted a cryptic snap saying ‘tonight - 7pm xx’ in a now-deleted Instagram story, with fans immediately clocking that the photo was of Washington Square Park.

Hundreds of fans could be seen eagerly waiting for her to show up, with some even sitting in trees waiting for whatever our Lorde and saviour had planned.

But the fun didn’t last very long, after police shut down the event due to the massive crowd.

“Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down”, she shared on her Instagram story just after 7 pm. “I am truly amazed by how many of you showed up!”

"But they're telling me you gotta disperse...I'm so sorry."

Did that break the spirit of these New Yorkers? Absolutely not.

Fans could be seen leaving the event while singing ‘Green Light’ off her album ‘Melodrama’ in the middle of the street, proving that a Lorde summer is coming for her American fans.

Lorde’s newest single, ‘What Was That’, is set to come out on the 25th of April, 2025, according to her Wikipedia (however, this is unconfirmed by Lorde herself).

It’s the first time Lorde has released music since her album ‘Solar Power’ back in 2021. Fans still got a small fix last year, after she collaborated with Charli XCX on a remix of ‘Girl, So Confusing’. She even performed live at Coachella Weekend One. Talk about iconic.

What did she have planned at the park? Was she going to show up? Was she going to sing her newest single? WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN!!!?
