Mission:Impossible director raves about NZ and working with Tom Cruise

“If I could live anywhere…"

‘Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning’ hits cinemas this weekend, and More FM’s Simon Barnett hit the red carpet in South Korea to not only chat with Tom Cruise but also director Christopher McQuarrie.

Speaking with Si on the red carpet, McQuarrie shared his love for New Zealand, saying, “We have friends there. If I could live anywhere, I would live in New Zealand.”

While on the red carpet, Tom Cruise also shared, “I love New Zealand”

Following on to say “I'd love to (return). I'd like to film there again and just visit my friends - I got a lot of friends there."

After working closely with Tom Cruise in ‘Mission: Impossible’ and ‘Top Gun’ films, McQuarrie shared what sets Cruise apart from others in the industry: “As long as he’s been in the movie business, as many films as he’s made, he’s still a student of film. He loves learning from the people around him.”

McQuarrie shared the concern he had around Cruise doing his own stunts, joking, “If anything happens to Tom, I’ll be the one answering. When people ask what’s going through my mind, I just say ‘a good lawyer and a suit’.”

With part of ‘Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning’ being filmed in the Arctic, McQuarrie described it as “the most beautiful place I’ve ever shot.”

“It was a high point of my career. I’d go back there tomorrow,” he said. “We were shooting in -40 degree temps, the gear you had to wear was insane.”

As for what’s next for McQuarrie? He kept it simple: “I have no plans after tonight.”

If previous films are anything to go by, we can’t wait to see what he does next.
